A group of golds from various localities: a number of slabs, some historic pieces, and some unusual localities!
ML00595 - Gold with Galena & Pyrrhotite
980' Level, Kensington Mine, Berners Bay, Alaska, USA
miniature - 4.8 x 4.7 x 3.4 cm
$ 500.00
The original Kensington Mine ceased operations in 1928. The mine is now currently in production having secured permits for operations in 2005. This specimen was collected in April of 1993, presumably by someone doing exploration in the area. I visited the mine site in 1987, and collected samples at the surface that ran 2 oz/ton, but never saw any visible gold. In fact, this is the only visible gold specimen I have ever seen available from the mine.

Ballarat, Victoria, Australia
small cabinet - 5.7 x 4.0 x 3.3 cm

Historic gold in quartz from Ballarat, Australia. While the piece is not impressive by Australian standards, it came from an important American collection; that of Henry G Hanks, California's first state mineralogist. Hanks (1826-1927) is the namesake of hanksite, a mineral first described at Searles Lake, CA.
